Who we are

A greener way to move around Mombasa.

Bike is Best is a Mombasa bike-sharing service, and a movement for transport that is greener, healthier and open to everyone. Our mission is safe, inclusive, low-emission mobility that gives people a real alternative to the car for everyday trips. The hire desk on Moyne Drive is where that starts: a bike for an hour or a day, and a community of riders to go with it.

  • Greener cities

Every trip on a bike instead of a car or a boda is exhaust Mombasa never breathes. The aim is climate-positive transport, not only cheaper transport.

  • Healthier living

A bike turns the trips you already make into the exercise you never find time for. Half an hour a day in the saddle is the whole prescription.

  • Community first

Saturday group rides, riding lessons for women, beach cleanups and mangrove planting. Hire a bike and you are part of it.

“Great experience riding with bike is best”

I enjoy the biking events they organise. A plus is they have bikes for hire, whether you are looking for normal bikes or ebikes, they have both options. They provide helmets and reflector jackets as well. Great experience so far, would definitely recommend them for those cyclists in the Mombasa area looking for cycling adventures or just looking at hiring bikes.

Some things to improve please - clearer planning on routes to also get to know local conditions, keep groups together better (people get spread out, take unplanned breaks, take different routes etc, it can be quite chaotic), try to keep to time much better, aim to alternate between Saturday and Sunday mornings (different people can organise if needed)

Questions

Before you book

Anything else? Chat with us or WhatsApp us.

What ID do you accept?

Kenyan national ID (old or Maisha card), passport, or driving licence. Visitors can use a passport.

Is there a deposit?

No. The rate card lists no deposit: your verified ID and a signed agreement take its place.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You verify once, and your bookings and receipts live there. The same account works in the Bike is Best app.

What if the bike is damaged or stolen?

Normal wear and tear is covered. Damage caused by the rider is charged at cost from the rate card shown at handover, unless you added damage cover (KSh 100) at checkout, in which case accidental damage costs you nothing. A bike stolen while left unlocked is charged at cost either way, so lock it every time.

Can you bring the bike to my hotel?

Yes, within Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu, for rides of 4 hours or more booked at least 2 hours ahead. Add "Delivered to you" at checkout (KSh 300) and tell us the hotel or building. We bring the bike, fit the helmet, and collect it at the end.

Do I have to do the ID check online?

No. Choose "I'll show my ID at the desk" and the desk checks it when you collect. Either way it happens once.

What if it rains?

A shower passes quickly here; shelter and carry on, the clock keeps running. If it is pouring before you set off, move your pickup or cancel free from your booking link up to 2 hours before. If a storm stops a ride early, message us and we will sort out the unused time.

What if the ebike battery runs out?

A full battery covers about 60 km, more than a day's riding. If it does run low the ebike still rides as a normal bike, and if it has failed, message us: we swap it or refund the unused time.

Can I change or cancel?

Yes. Move the pickup time or cancel free up to 2 hours before, and refunds reach your M-Pesa within 24 hours. Running late on the day? Extend from your booking link; bikes are due back by 19:00.

Under 5 km? Bike is best.
